Zbigniew Preisner - Requiem for My Friend

Kai Kairos

Toìs pàsi ho chrònos
kaì kairòs
to pantì pràgmati hypò ton uranòn

Kai kairòs, kai kairòs

Tou tekeìn, tou apothaneìn
tou phyteùsai, tou ektìlai to pefyteumènon.

Kai kairòs, kai kairòs

tou apokteìnai, tou iàsasthai,
tou kathelìn, tou oikodomeìn,
tou klaùsai, tou gelàsai,
tou kòpsasthai, tou orhèsasthai.

Kai kairòs, kai kairòs

Tou baleìn lìthous, tou synagageìn lìthous,
tou zetèsai, tou apolèsai,
tou phylàxai, tou ekbaleìn,

Kai kairòs, kai kairòs

Tou rèxai, tou pàpsai,
tou sigàn, tou laleìn,
tou philèsai, tou misèsai.
Kairòs polèmou, kairòs eirènes…

Kai kairòs, kai kairòs…

To every thing there is a season
and a time
to every purpose under the heaven.

And a time, and a time

To be born, to die;
to plant, to reap;

And a time, and a time

to kill, to heal,
to break down, to build up;
to weep, to laugh;
to mourn, to dance.

And a time, and a time

to cast away stones, to gather stones together;
to embrace, to refrain from embracing;
to get, to lose, to keep, to cast away.

And a time, and a time

to rend, to sew,
to keep silence, to speak;
to love, to hate;
A time of war, and a time of peace…

And a time, and a time…

Officium

Requiem aeternam dona eis, Domine :
et lux perpetua luceat eis.
Te decet hymnus, Deus, in Sion,
Et tibi reddetur votum in Jerusalem :
exaudi orationem meam,
ad te omnis caro veniet.
Requiem aeternam dona eis, Domine : et lux
perpetua luceat eis.

Grant them eternal rest, O Lord,
and may perpetual light shine upon them.
A hymn of praise is due to you in Zion, O God,
and in Jerusalem vows will be paid to you.
Hear my prayer:
all flesh shall come to you.
Grant them eternal rest, O Lord,
and may perpetual light shine upon them.

Dies Irae

Rex tremendae majestatis,
Qui salvandos salvas gratis,
Salva me, fons pietatis.
Ingemisco tamquam reus :
Culpa rubet vultus meus :
Supplicanti parce, Deus.
Dies irae, dies illa
Solvet saeclum in favilla,
Teste David cum Sibylla.

O king of dreadful majesty,
Who grantest grace and mercy free,
Grant mercy now and grace to me.
I groan beneath the guilt which thou
Canst read upon my blushing brow,
But spare O God, thy suppliant now.
That day of wrath and grief and shame,
Shall fold the world in sheeted flame,
As David’s psalm and Sibyl’s songs proclaim.

Lacrimosa

Lacrimosa dies illa,
Qua resurget ex favilla
Judicandus homo reus.Huic ergo parce, Deus :
Pie Jesu Domine,
Dona eis requiem.

Ah! that day of tears and mourning!
From the dust of earth returning,
Man for judgement must prepare him:
Spare, O God, in mercy spare him!
Lord, all pitying, Jesu blest,
Grant them Thine eternal rest.

Ascende Huc

Ascende huc, et ostendam tibi,
quae oportet fieri post haec.

Come up hither and I will show thee things
which must be hereafter.
